as we look at that fiscal cliff, what does that really do? it says government is going to spend less money, less money means less job training, less ways to get the unemployed back to work. that really says that we're probably going to be stuck with an unemployment problem for a long time. >> so avoiding a fiscal cliff doesn't necessarily mean getting people back to work? >> no, look, the economy is only growing by less than 2%. and when you got sub 2% growth, we're not going to be creating hundreds of thousands of jobs a month. that's what we need to see to see that unemployment rate come down and get us out of this hole. >> jill schlessinger from cbs money watch.com, thank you for joining us. appreciate it. >>> this week the air force is conducting a big sweep of work spaces. what are they looking for? well, they're looking for pictures of scantily clad women. yes. we'll explain. >>> and basketball legend kareem abdul-jabbar, the nba's all time leading scorer, joins me to talk about his own battle against a rare form of blood cancer. annou]

i'm going to tell you what others won't about the fiscal cliff. the head of starbucks said it will damage the u.s.'s reputation and shenanigans from capitol hill and with a cool 500 bucks to spend, should you use them now for a share in apple? apple says it will build some of the iconic mac computers in the u.s. listen to what apple ceo tim cook said to nbc's brian williams. >> so we've been working for years on doing more and more in the united states. next year, we will do one of our existing mac lines in the united states. >> but apple stock has been singing the blues for a few months. plummeted 25% off the all-high and a beating this week. 6.5% lower yesterday. apple up more than a percent today. kurndly around $544 a share. is now a good time to get in. you're all asking me. i'm asking katie stockton in connecticut. katie, is apple stock down off its high a phenomenally successful stock to hold for so many investors and showing the chart again. you look at technical trading patterns in the stock. do they tell you it's time to buy, sell or hol

the big battle over the fiscal cliff getting increasingly contentious. as we know, time is running out. just 27 days to go until more than $500 billion in automatic spending cuts and tax hikes actually kick in. now, the president, he is standing firm saying there's not going to be a deal medicals taxes for the wealthiest americans go up. the president is offering $400 billion in cuts from entitlements, but he also wants to spend $50 billion more on infrastructure. go to house speaker john boehner. he is offering $800 billion in increased revenue. he also wants much deeper cuts in entitlements and $800 billion in other cuts many spending. we've got reporters -- i want to start off with you. dana bash on the hill. a standoff here, republicans essentially saying, look, the president is not being reasonable here, and then you have the white house saying this is magic beans and fairy dust. is this a lot of posturing here? are we really at an impasse? >> yes to both of those questions. there is a lot of post urg, but we do seem to be at an impasse. i want to s

but if there's no deal and the country goes over that fiscal cliff, taxes go up for everyone, mandatory spending cuts go into effect, a lot of folks are going to say where was the president? he was just re-elected. why couldn't he put together a package, a deal to avoid this disaster? >> i think this is a question of political leadership. and as that poll showed, there's no doubt that the president has the political advantage going into this. but at some point, and i think we're kind of getting close to it, the president has to be able to pivot and to say how do i turn this political advantage into a real policy accomplishment? and, wolf, i don't think you're going to do that with continued campaign style events like we just saw meeting with middle class families. okay. we get that. that occurred during the campaign. the white house has clearly gotten its message out. i think now there has to be a next step. you know, timing is everything in politics. and this is absolutely no different. what i'm getting from talking to some democrats on the hill is i think there's actually a lot of pen

now, i'm not going to blame it all on the fiscal cliff. we have a slowing economy. we have slowing economies around the world. but i was at a dinner with a bunch of ceos in washington who are interested and care about this fiscal issue on monday night. and they were talking about we're not hiring. we're allowing attrition to happen. we're holding back on big spending. we want to see what happens here before we go forward. what's interesting about this is that the consumer seems to have a different view. the consumer -- for the consumer so far, this has sort of passed by. i wouldn't say blissful ignorance, but it has not affected their behavior. you had a fairly strong set of economic numbers this fall. the housing market seems to have finally turned up after a period of obviously deep decline. and so consumer confidence, which is one of our best proxies for this kind of thing, has been turning up and really does not yet -- the fiscal cliff does not yet seem to have penetrated their consciousness. for those of us who were in stores over the holiday weekend, stores ar
